For a large distributed system with thousands of I/O points, the NX or NJ series is the better fit—different platform, different software, different budget entirely. For a truly small application with a dozen inputs, the CP1L does the job for a fraction of the price. The CJ2M shines in the middle.

Training isn't always worth the money either. Our senior controls engineer hasn't been to an Omron class in years—he knows the platform cold, and sending him would be spending money to teach him things he already teaches. The classes pay off when you're adding new team members or building a skill you genuinely don't have yet.

And if you're running PLCs in a clean, stable environment with no backup power concerns? Some of the battery and generator advice won't apply. That's fine. The principle still does: read the manual, schedule the maintenance, and put the line items in the budget.

The hardware gets all the attention. It's the boring line items that decide whether your PLC investment was smart. That's not a slogan. It's what six years of invoices look like when you add them up.
