Omron PLC Buying Guide: What I Learned From Ordering Industrial Controls for 42 People

The Short Answer

If you're buying an Omron micro PLC or any industrial control component, the vendor who tells you what they don't do is the one you should trust with everything else.

I've placed about 250 orders for automation components since 2021, and the pattern is consistent: the suppliers who claim to handle everything—PLCs, PEX control panels, contactors, even pulse fuel pumps—are the ones who cause the most problems. The ones who say "we only do X, talk to these guys for Y" are the ones whose shipments actually work when they arrive.

That sounds backwards if you're optimizing for fewer POs. I know because I used to optimize for fewer POs.

Why You Should Believe Me (Or At Least Not Ignore This)

I'm the office administrator for a 42-person systems integration company. I handle all component ordering—roughly $340,000 annually across 11 vendors. I report to both our operations manager and our controller.

I'm not an electrical engineer. I can't tell you the difference between an Omron CJ and NJ series PLC by looking at a spec sheet. But I've learned to ask the right questions, and I've learned what happens when I don't.

In 2022, I tried consolidating our industrial control orders through one "full-service" supplier. The pitch was straightforward: one PO, one invoice, one shipping schedule. It lasted four months. During that time, we had three wrong-part deliveries, one missing certification document that held up a client install, and a PEX control panel that arrived with wiring that didn't match our engineer's specs. The vendor's response each time was some version of "we'll make it right," which they did—eventually. But "eventually" doesn't help when a tech is standing on a job site waiting for a part.

We went back to using specialists.

What Specialists Actually Look Like

Here's a concrete example. Last year we needed to replace the control system on a small conveyor line. Our lead engineer specified an Omron micro plc (CP1H series, I think—I just forward the spec sheet) plus a few contactors and a replacement PEX control panel.

I sent the list to three vendors.

Vendor A: "We can do all of this. $4,200, ships in 10 days."

Vendor B: "We can do the PLC and contactors. $2,800, ships in 5 days. For the PEX panel, you should talk to [specific panel shop]. They're better at custom enclosures than we are."

Vendor C: "We have the PLC and contactors. The PEX panel, we can source but it'll take 3 weeks and I can't guarantee the wiring matches your spec. Your call."

I went with Vendor B for the PLC and contactors ($2,800), and took their recommendation for the panel shop. Total cost was $3,650—less than Vendor A—and everything arrived in 6 days. The panel shop had the PEX enclosure built correctly the first time because they do it all day, every day.

Vendor A wasn't lying when they said they could do it. They just couldn't do it well. And they didn't tell me that.

The Question That Reveals Everything

Most buyers ask: "What's your best price?"

The question you should ask: "What part of this order would you send somewhere else if you could?"

I started asking this in 2023 after a vendor admitted—after a delivery went wrong—that they "usually don't stock Omron PLC communication protocol modules" and had to source them from a competitor. If they'd told me that upfront, I would have split the order myself and saved two weeks.

The vendors who answer this question honestly are the ones who've thought about their own limits. The ones who say "we handle everything equally well" are either lying or haven't been burned yet.

Where I Still Get It Wrong

I don't always follow my own advice.

Last month, I ordered a pulse fuel pump for our test bench from a vendor I'd never used. They were 22% cheaper than our regular source. The order took three weeks instead of the promised five days, and when it arrived, the fittings didn't match the spec sheet. We had to machine adapters in-house—probably $400 in labor.

The $180 I "saved" cost us more than double in rework.

I still kick myself for that one. The warning signs were there: vague shipping estimates, no technical contact on the website, a price that seemed too good for the spec. But I got greedy on the line item.

The Boundary Condition

This approach doesn't work everywhere.

For off-the-shelf components under $200—wire, connectors, basic sensors—consolidating through one supplier is fine. The stakes are low and the parts are interchangeable. I order all our small electrical supplies from one distributor and I've never had a problem.

But for anything that has to work with something else—a PLC that needs to communicate over a specific protocol, a control panel that has to fit an existing enclosure, a contactor with a particular coil voltage—specialists matter. And the specialist who tells you "I'm not the right person for that part" is giving you better service than the generalist who says "sure, we can do it."

It took me a few expensive mistakes to learn that. If you're newer to this, maybe you can skip that part.
