The cheapest Omron PLC quote is rarely the cheapest Omron PLC installation. No one was trying to scam me. The quote just assumed a different scope. That's why I now ask “what's not included” before I ask “what's the price.” The vendor who puts every fee on the table — even if the total looks higher — usually costs less in the end.

If you aren't asking “what's not included,” you're not comparing quotes. You're comparing guesses.

Here's where the real costs hide:

  • Software and licensing. Omron's programming tools are capable, but they're not free. If your quote says “PLC + software” without a version or license type, ask. A vague line item usually means it's not in the quote.
  • Engineering time. Hardware was maybe 40% of one recent project. The rest was programming, commissioning, testing, and training. That's the stuff that doesn't show up on the purchase order.
  • The small stuff. Cables, end plates, memory cassettes, spare fuses, and one “quick question” to support. Each one is small. Together, they're real.

When I say complete, I do not mean “a quote with enough numbers to feel complete.” I mean a BOM that matches the machine and the process.

Not every expensive lesson was about hardware

I once saved $300 on a “new in box” CJ2M from a third-party reseller. It was new, but the firmware situation turned into a mess, and we spent $1,100 on a genuine unit, rush shipping, and two service calls. The “discount” was a joke. That's the classic penny-wise, pound-foolish mistake, and I've seen it repeat itself in other people's budgets.

The hardware price is the visible number, but the project cost comes from programming, configuration, commissioning, and getting the rest of the building to talk to it. A lighting control panel might be $800 on paper. If it needs two days of integration time, it's not $800.

I won't pretend I've bought a Hestia control panel myself — I haven't — but I've seen enough quotes to know that nobody should pick a control panel by list price alone. The same checklist still works: what's included, what's configured, what's tested, who trains your team, and what happens when something doesn't work.

How to compare Omron PLC quotes without guessing

  1. Send the same BOM to at least three distributors. Not “a PLC system.” Model numbers. If you send a vague list, you get vague pricing.
  2. Ask what's not included. Make it a required field in your bid request. Let every vendor know they'll be compared on scope, not just price.
  3. Separate hardware cost from engineering cost. If you're buying an Omron CJ series PLC for a straightforward machine, engineering might be 20% of the project. If it's a retrofit with no documentation, engineering can be 60%.
  4. Include training and spare parts in your total cost. One cheap quote that adds three weeks to delivery has a real cost: idle labor.
  5. Put a dollar figure on your own team's time. If someone is searching how to run control panel as admin, or why the software won't install, that's research and support. It's part of the project.
  6. Cross-check model numbers against Omron's official product documentation. Distributors make mistakes too. One digit off can mean a different power supply voltage or a different communication protocol.

If this sounds obvious, good. It was not obvious to me, and I paid for that.

Where this logic breaks down

This approach isn't universal. If you're an OEM building 200 identical machines, you negotiate differently. Your engineering cost gets amortized across units, and a small price difference per unit matters more. If you're replacing a failed PLC in a running plant, availability matters more than price. In those cases, the “total cost” calculation becomes “total downtime cost,” and that's a different beast.

It also changes if your team already knows the platform. If your engineers are fluent in Omron's environment, the training cost drops, and a slightly higher quote might be worth it. I'd rather pay more for a familiar PLC than less for one that means retraining every controls engineer.

So do not take this as “always buy the most complete quote.” That's not the point. The point is to make the comparison honest. The cheapest Omron PLC quote isn't a myth — it's just incomplete.
