Omron PLC Types Compared: CP1L vs NJ/NX from a Procurement Desk

Why a purchaser, not an engineer, is comparing Omron PLCs

I'm an office administrator for a 140-person packaging company. I manage roughly $40,000 a year in automation purchasing—PLCs, sensors, spare parts, cables—across about eight vendors, processing maybe 60 orders annually. When our controls engineer left a sticky note on my desk that just said "need Omron PLC controller," I had to figure out what that meant, fast.

Because "Omron PLC" isn't one thing. It's a family of things. The two names that kept coming up around our shop were the CP1L and the NJ/NX series. Both are legitimate Omron PLC controllers. Both are built well. But buying one versus the other changes your budget, your training time, and even your control panel layout.

Dimension 1: Sticker price vs the real cost

On paper, the CP1L wins. A CP1L CPU unit runs roughly $200 to $500 depending on I/O configuration, based on online distributor listings I checked in February 2025. Expansion modules add another $80 to $200 each. For a simple machine with a couple dozen inputs and outputs, you can be fully equipped for maybe $800 all-in.

The NJ/NX? The CPU alone typically starts around $1,200 and goes up from there. By the time you add an EtherCAT coupler, power supply, and possible safety modules, you're in a different price neighborhood entirely.

But here's the thing: the CP1L can't do integrated motion control. If your application needs servo axes, you either add a separate motion controller—more cost, more wiring, more licensing—or you step up to the NJ/NX, where motion is built in. I've seen the CP1L route end up more expensive than the NJ/NX route once everything gets added up.

The upside of the NJ/NX for our packaging line was integrated servo and safety over one network. The risk was retraining two technicians. I kept asking myself: is the performance gain worth a week of migration chaos? For us, yes—but only because we were building the line from scratch. On an existing machine? Probably not.

Dimension 2: Two different software worlds

The CP1L programs with CX-One or the older CX-Programmer. The interface is dated—I'll be the first to admit it. But our senior electrician has been using it for years. He doesn't need a manual. He doesn't need a training class. That has real dollar value.

The NJ/NX runs on Sysmac Studio. Completely different environment—more visual, more integrated, and honestly kind of impressive. One of our younger techs powered up an NX7 with a touchscreen HMI and called it "a sci-fi control panel." He wasn't wrong. It looks like the future.

But looking like the future comes at a price. Expect a learning curve of one to two weeks if your team grew up on CX-One. Sysmac Studio training isn't free, and neither is the downtime while people figure it out. A company down the road from us bought a high-end Omron controller, then paid for 30 hours of training per technician that they never fully utilized.

So the real question isn't which software is "better." It's which one your maintenance team can actually support at 2 a.m. when a line goes down. That's a procurement question, not a programming one.

Dimension 3: What your panel looks like (and why it matters)

Physically, the CP1L is a compact brick. Basically a self-contained unit. It clips on a DIN rail, takes up minimal space, and doesn't require a rack. If you're retrofitting an old machine or building something small, this is ideal. Our technicians genuinely like working with it.

The NJ/NX is modular. You plan a rack, add modules, think about network topology. The result looks more like a modern control architecture—cleaner, more organized, more expandable. When customers walk our production floor, the NJ/NX cabinet gets comments. The CP1L cabinet doesn't, because nobody notices it.

Here's an analogy from the other side of my job: we installed a Rhombus control panel for facility security last year. Not a PLC—that's for door access and cameras. But the buying logic is the same. You can buy individual boxes, mount them here and there, and cable them together. Or you can buy an integrated system that fits a larger ecosystem, looks better, and does more—at a higher first cost. Dimension 4: What happens when something breaks

This is where I want to be honest, because I have a scar.

In 2023, I found a "great deal" on a used CP1L. About 40% under distributor price. Actually, let me correct myself—around 35% under, I'd have to check. The seller said it came from a decommissioned line and tested fine. I skipped verification. Didn't even ask our tech to bench-test it before install.

It worked for three weeks. Then two outputs died, and one input started acting randomly. Our tech spent four hours tracing the problem with a digital multimeter—checking the 24V power supply, testing voltage across output terminals, verifying continuity. Diagnosis: a damaged output driver. Probably an overcurrent event in its previous life.

The replacement cost more than the savings. Plus the labor. Plus the downtime. I learned the hard way that a used PLC's price isn't its real price.

This is actually where knowing how to use a digital multimeter pays off. It won't fix a bad PLC, but a $50 meter and ten minutes of testing can catch a problem before it becomes a production stop. I keep one in the parts cabinet now. Not for me to use—I still barely know which setting is which—but for our techs to use on anything we buy from the secondary market.

So which Omron PLC types should you buy?

Honestly? It depends on your machine, your team, and your timeline. There's no universal winner.

Choose the CP1L if:

  • Your machine is simple—discrete I/O, no servo axes, no advanced safety requirements
  • Your maintenance team already knows CX-One, and training isn't in the budget
  • First cost is a real constraint, and the application isn't likely to grow
  • You're buying a spare unit to sit on a shelf

Choose the NJ/NX if:

  • You need integrated motion control or advanced safety functions
  • You're building a new line, and panel design matters to customers
  • Your team is ready for Sysmac Studio (or already works with EtherCAT)
  • You want one ecosystem for PLC, motion, safety, and HMI

And one piece of honest advice: the CP1L is not good enough for multi-axis servo applications. The NJ/NX is absurd overkill for a pump skid with four sensors and two relays. Knowing the difference isn't a technical skill—it's a budget skill.

When we consolidated PLC sourcing across our three locations in 2024, one thing became clear: the cheapest quote isn't the cheapest option. My rule after getting burned is simple—the person who fixes the machine at 2 a.m. gets a vote in which PLC family we buy. The engineer knows what the machine needs. The electrician knows what he can repair blindfolded. And I know what the budget can handle. That's the comparison that actually matters.
